Leyden Gas Storage Facility (2003 - 2004)
Xcel Energy

Denver, CO

The Leyden Natural Gas Storage Facility is a former coal mine cavern west of Denver, Colorado that was used to store up to 2 million MCF of natural gas since 1959. Suburban development of the metropolitan area prompted the closure of the facility in 2001, and the cavern is being flooded with water to remove the gas. During this closure process, soil vapor wells above and adjacent to the facility are monitored for methane to prevent hazardous conditions and exposure to nearby homes.

In addition to vapor intrusion expertise, XcelEnergy (formally Public Service Company of Colorado) needed an accurate, timely, and simple method to disseminate an increasing number of monitoring results to both the state regulatory agency and the public.

Tom Liebert proposed and subsequently developed a customized MS Access database with a simple, single form interface that allows users to view monitoring results in tabular or graph format. Data are queried by clicking on maps of the site and simple combo box date and compound selections. The solution has been found efficient, portable, and an effective tool for both regulators and public understanding.
