Reviving the site
Yup, it's time to revive the site again: looking for a new job as of May 2008. First change is, naturally, an updated resume, and posting some fresh Open Source software skills. And since this site (actually, the host) is a bit limited, I've started a new slice of the web for showing some work examples: zTreb.com. Check back soon...
del.icio.us tags, Technorati listing
Moving my bookmarks to del.icio.us and tagging them (a tag is like a keyword or category label), as well as added my blog, The Geography Report, to Technorati. Use Technorati like Google to search blogs ("Technorati is a real-time search engine that keeps track of what is going on in the blogosphere - the world of weblogs.") or del.icio.us to see other people's bookmarks ("del.icio.us is a collection of favorites - yours and everyone else's.") Both sites work as a type of social networking for geeks...
Software Applications Summaries
Search tomliebert.com
New search box on the home page. Still feeling like visitors are not seeing enough of my site, so hopefully having the ability to search for something in particular will help.
Vapor Intrusion Data Management System
Introduced a concept I'm calling VDMS ( Vapor Intrusion Data Management System) on the applications page. Certainly this needs more expaination, so check back for schematics and a better conceptual description soon. VIDMS is a consulting product - taking advantage of experience and previously-authored code and independently developed modules, algorithms, and data analysis functions. VIDMS describes a system and not a single, packaged software application.
Simplified Home Page & Mailing List
I found after reviewing visitor statistics to my site that most people are not viewing much of the web site. This information, along with observing visitor experiences and questions while walking them to a page or link on the phone, has lead me to simplify the home and resources pages. Didn't really remove any content, though. Also, I placed a 'subscribe' box on the home page to help me manage my email mailing list. Be sure to add your email address if you're interested in keeping up to date on changes and additions to tomliebert.com - and make sure you tell me your name while signing up!
New Links
Dropped in a few new links on the Resources page: - Internet Tools Category: Found a pretty extensive list of GIS File Formats and Extentions, and a nice Units Converter tool (think feet to meters)
- New England GIS Consultants: Added Harvard Design & Mapping Co., Inc. (HDM) to the list
And updated the What's New section in the sidebar with a link to " 7 Reasons to Use GIS" blog entry from a few days ago.
New blog posting at The Geography Report
There's a new posting on The Geography Report titled " 7 Reasons to Use GIS" - and don't forget to check back soon for more Tech Tips (like using Excel worksheet functions in Access).
Improvements to the Resouces Page
Changed the javascript for following links on the Resources page so that following a link opens a new browser window - trying to keep from forwarding users off my site. Also added a RSS news feed of the All Points Blog (from Directions Magazine). It contains comments by their editors on GIS in the news and new technology - the best part about it is what it isn't: no paid submissions or press releases. Seems like all industry news these days is simply press releases... (for examples see DirectionsMag.com, geoCommunity's Spatial News, GISCafe, or GISuser)
Email Updates Announcement
Several new updates have been posted to tomliebert.com: - The What's New section now has a Site Updates link to inform you of, well, updates to the site.
- Posted a new project description, Casper Refinery GIS and added some work examples to the Republican River Litigation project description.
- The Resources page is where I keep interesting and new web links available. I've fixed the code so that this page works correctly and added lots of links that might be useful. I'm looking for more so make sure to send me a link or two to keep it fresh (current?).
Be sure to let me know if you want me to take you off my email list. And thank you! I've enjoyed hearing from everyone since my last email. - Tom
Republican River Project Description
Added some examples to the Republican River Compact Litigation project description page and set this as the 'highlighted project'. New work examples include: - A html-based field notes map detailing a water administrator's field notes and photographs linked to their location on an interactive map of the river basin. Note that this example uses browser pop-up windows to display the images - so disable your pop-up blocker while viewing (remember, this work was done in 2001) (Additionally, use IE to view this - Mozilla Firefox wasn't around in 2001!)
- A talking points hand-out describing the satellite land use study - the information is in bullet format with images, but it's pretty informative nonetheless.
- Jpeg of one of my ground-truthing/field survey progress report maps. Make sure you view this image at full size (my browser likes to try to fit it to the screen and it looks terrible).
- An example of the final land use / consumptive use GIS layer.
Casper Refinery Project Description
Added a new project description of the work I did in Casper, Wyoming creating a GIS-based remediation decision support system. This GIS system was developed concurrently with the introduction of a Collaborative Process negotiation between my client, Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality; the property owner, BP/Amoco; and the community of Casper. This project was awarded the EPA's Outstanding Voluntary Remediation Project of 2002 Award. You can also download and read about the project in this poster presentation given at the American Water Resources Association Annual Conference in 2002.
Created an 'Updates Blog'
Changes to the web site are now logged via this page using blog-style entries. Added a link called Site Updates.
Data Management Best Practices Discussion
Links fixed and updated
The ' Resources' page has been updated with useful links. Thanks to Scarlett's Web for looking finding a fix for my javascript links drop-down menu problem.

New host and email address
Finally gave up on earthlink.net and geocities.com - found that I could host my web page for cheaper with my own domain for far cheaper. Let's hope this cheap host decision was a good one... So my liebert@earthlink.net will expire at the end of the month, and my new address is: tom@tomliebert.com
